Numbers in Daily Life

Numerology is the study of numbers as meaningful constructs related to human consciousness.  Numbers occupy our lives in many ways, starting with number values associated with the letters of words, especially our names.  We have the numbers of our birthday, month, and year.  Most countries have a number sequence for citizens (in the United States, it is the 9-digit Social Security Number or SSN).  Most of us have a phone number; if we drive a car, we have a number plate.  Each word and sequence of numbers can be reduced to a number between 1 and 9, and each of those numbers has spiritual meaning.

This article will explore numbers in our daily lives; how do the numbers “appear” to us and what do they mean? They can appear as single digits repeating or a number we need to calculate. Calculations will be done using the Pythagorean number assignments (instead of Chaldean or Gematria).  If you would like to know more about the other two most used number systems, please read my article: Number Systems and Your Numbers on Ask Astrology.

Paying Attention to Numbers

As we go about our days, most of the time we operate “unconsciously”, doing activities that are part of our normal routine.  Even when we have something specific going on for the day, the activities to accomplish a special task most often function without much mindfulness.  When I need to go to the grocery store, I get in my car, take the usual route, and do my shopping.  I only become mindful when the routine is interrupted – the car will not start, I realize I forgot my wallet, the store is closed for some reason, and so on.

We can train ourselves to be more mindful, on simple method could involve buying a deck of tarot or oracle cards and keeping them by our bedside. Either in the morning or at night, or both, we can draw a card with the intention to “be mindful” of the message throughout the day or before we fall asleep.  You could do numerological work using cards as well, since they are numbered (except for the court cards of the minor arcana in the tarot, but it is fairly easy to remember that the page is 11, the knight is 12, the queen is 13, and the king is 14, so 2, 3, 4, and 5 respectively).

We can also intend to pay attention.  In other words, we can set, as a trigger in our mind space, the intention to “allow” messages from the world to “become aware” to our consciousness.  Since I have worked to be open about number synchronicity in my life, I find myself attending to numbers when I need a particular message.  As with all things spiritual, I can be seeking a message and receive one or one can “come at me” without my effort at all and give me a message that requires me to find the question.

Like most people, I assume, I worry about money and my finances from time-to-time.  If I have that worry on my mind, and because I am willfully open to receiving messages from spirit about money concerns, messages will often come in the form of a number I see very specifically, or repeatedly throughout my day.  I have since learned that my “everything will be alright” number is 11 and my “do something” (like review my bank statements) number is 3.

Where Do Numbers Appear?

It is not hyperbole to say, “everywhere”, but I have found a couple of consistent places to see numbers and “check-in” for messages.  For me, that place is the dashboard of my car.  Most cars have digital displays for just about every bit of information regarding your car while driving.  The most obvious is a display for time.  Sometimes the time “catches my attention” and gives me a number to “figure out”.  Unexpectedly I will notice myself considering the time, and not because I was thinking, “what time is it?”, but rather I just felt compelled to look at the time, which then leads me to calculate that number.

Let’s say the time displayed 12:53, which is 1+2+5+4=12=3.  Three is the number most associated with hard work and persistent effort through your interactions with others.  In Morris Goodman’s Modern Numerology, 3 is the Life Cycle of the Artist. If you were born on the 3rd of any given month, it is a number for popularity.  If your full name reduces to a 3, then you are here to inspire and uplift others. When 3 “appears” to me, I know I need to pay attention to a situation in my life regarding the people I come into contact with, meet while out, or who look to me for guidance and inspiration.

While I am driving, I can also ask a question in my mind and then “look at the display” for a numerological answer and consider what action I want to take based on the number I calculate. Say I am trying to decide about taking a vacation and wondering if I should do something small and simple, like a short trip to the beach, which is just 2 hours away, or something more involved, like a visit to a good friend an airplane flight away.  I set the question in my mind and then look at the time.  The number I get will help me decide how to address the question.

The clock in the car is not the only number I notice, or “play” with.  Sometimes it is the odometer reading, the speedometer, and miles left before I need to refill my take.  It could be the license plate of the car in front of me or the mailbox number of a house I pass in a neighborhood while ignoring all the others.  Clock displays provide the easiest and most common chance to get or seek number messages in your daily life.

Interpreting the Numbers

Below is a short, quick interpretation for a number, as an answer to a mindful question or “thump” on the head by the universe.

1 = focus on the self, act now

2 = partnership, get some help

3 = work at it, there are no short cuts

4 = patience, prudence, wait

5 = shake things up, catalyze the situation

6 = provide help, perform service

7 = solve the mystery, figure out the purpose

8 = take charge, lead

9 = surrender, retreat and reflect

So, I am driving along and thinking about, “how can I help my daughter with her transition into middle school?” I glance at my odometer, see the number 124360, and calculate it down to a 7.  For the moment, I need to understand the purpose of middle school, its purpose for all children, my experience with it, and what I see as its purpose for my daughter.  Exploring the “mystery” of middle school is what I need to do at the moment to help my daughter, so when we next discuss it, I can share my best understanding of “why middle school”.
