About Psychic Abilities and Power

We are all psychic but to varying degrees. Even psychic skills face logical limitations; some people are just more sensitive, sensitive in different ways, and more talented than others. Everyone can run, but some people run faster, longer, and with more grace than others. With training, you can improve and maximize the psychic skills you have, just like improving your speed, endurance, and grace as a runner.

Sometimes psychic gifts remain dormant until a specific trigger moment, like a near-death experience, or they are unlocked through concentrated efforts at meditation and mindfulness work. There is also a wide range of talents, from simple intuition to channeling other entities. This section of the Ask Astrology website explores and explains the psychic skill of dowsing.

What is Dowsing?

Dowsing is the psychic skill by which the practitioner can use a rod or rods to locate objects, most often underground water sources. Their psychic energy flows into the rods which either “pull” them in the direction of the object or move the rods to point in the direction of the object.

History

“Though one might consider this art somewhat modern, it is very old. In 1949, a party of French explorers, while searching for evidence of lost civilizations in the Atlas Mts. Of North Africa, stumbled upon a massive system of caverns which were filled with old paintings and wall markings. One of the walls chalkings were of a man holding a forked branch in his hand while walking, followed by a group of admiring tribesmen. When these were carbon, it was found out that it was at least 8000 years old. This gives a brief insight into how old this tradition is.

The dowsing practice, as we know of today, basically originated from Germany during the 16th century. Back then it was used in attempts to find metals. Later Martin Luther, in 1518, declared it as an act that broke the first commandment.

Locating Objects and Locating Locations

Two primary uses of dowsing exist: locating objects and locating locations. The best-known object search is for underground water sources. But you can use dowsing to locate lost objects in your home or in your yard. If you have land you want to build a house on, you can use dowsing to find the best location for the house. If you want to skip feng shui, you can dowse to find the best location in your house for an altar.

Dowsing Tools

The most common dowsing tools are the rod or rods. A single rod is Y-shaped so the dowser can hold the two lengths of the top of the Y and point the single length of the bottom away from the body. The dowser relaxes and allows the location of the object or the location of the location to guide the rod to pull him or her in the direction of what he or she seeks.

Another rod solution involves using two rods that are L-shaped. The dowser holds the rods so that the short lengths are in his or her hand and the long lengths point away from his or her body. The rods are held parallel and when the dowser is facing the correct direction the rods will begin to move together. As the dowser moves closer to the sought-after object or location the rods will move closer together until they touch.

A dowser can also use a pendulum and ask questions to get to the location. The dowser will have his or her pendulum attuned to his psychic field and can ask yes/no questions about direction and proximity until he or she is able to get to the object or location.

Materials

A common tree branch works just fine, so long as it is Y-shaped. You may discover certain woods work better for you or the dowser, a maple tree branch instead of pine, a hardwood instead of a softwood. If you want to use, or the dowser uses, the L-shaped rods, then copper is the most common, but steel can work as well. Pendulums can be stone, crystal, or metal.

Testing your Dowsing Ability

Like all psychic skills, you may or may not have the ability. If you want to know if you have the ability, it is one of the easiest to test for, for obvious reasons. Probably the best tool for testing with is the L-shaped rods because they will move accordingly, and you will not have to “feel pulled” to determine if you have the skill.

Get two L-shaped rods, which you can purchase on Amazon. Get the rods and hold them at a 90-degree angle from your body loosely in your hands, so they can rotate in easily. Ask or think about an object, one where you know the current location. Face in a direction that is NOT aligned with the object.

Relax and be open with your energy. If you have the ability the rods should turn together in the direction of the object. Once you are aligned, start walking towards the object. As you get closer to the object the rods will start to draw closer and closer together. It is that simple.

Professional Dowsing

While it is not common knowledge, large companies will employ professional dowsers with proven track records to help them locate valuable minerals, water aquifers, and oil. Locally, a dowser can help people find the best spot for a well or the location to build something on land. You can even hire a dowser to help you find something lost in your home.

Who to Work With?

If you want to work with someone who has this skill, then it is best to seek out practitioners who, when vetted thoroughly, will be able to show you their skill and professionalism.

No matter what service you seek, a mechanic or psychic, it is always a wise policy to look at their business practice, testimonials, and credentials (both ones from an institution and based on their life experience). Talent can appear very early on, but using the talent wisely requires other life skills and maturity.

If you think or know you have the ability and want to develop it, look for accomplished practitioners who are also willing to teach. High-quality people exist in all professions and they all share similar traits in the way they present themselves to the public and develop their success.
