Maybe you see 11:11 on the clock every day–sometimes two times a day–or maybe you’ve got the number 808 following you around? There’s no denying that there are certain numbers that just seem to have something to say to us. These repetitive numbers are called Angel Numbers and they are thought to be messages from the spiritual realm, but what exactly do they mean and where are they coming from? Good news, there’s a secret to decoding Angel Numbers and it’s easier than you think.
An angel number is any repeating number. The most commonly seen angel number is 11/111/1111, AKA repeating 1’s. However, a number doesn’t have to be all the same number in order to be deemed an Angel Number. For instance, 911 is a common Angel Number. Another common one is seeing your birth date on receipts, addresses, telephone numbers etc.
A good rule to keep in mind here is that if a number feels like an Angel Number, it is. There’s no need to question yourself (I mean, seriously, you’re not hurting anyone by believing that the microwave clock can be spiritual).
One way of decoding an Angel Number is to study up on the numerology archetypes of each of the numbers. There are many forms of numerology such as Chinese and Chaldean, but I’m going to share the Pythagorean archetypes for the number 1-9.
1: The self, action, fresh starts and new beginnings
2: Relationships, friendships, intuition, gut instincts, observations
3: Growth, learning, inviting more of something into your life, creativity, socialization
4: Family, home, roots, foundations, stability, security
5: Change, chaos, freedom, pleasure, joy
6: Love, caregiving, selflessness, healing
7: Truth, spirituality and science, asking questions
8: Energy, reciprocity, power, magick, money, manifestation, karma
9: Expansion, endings, education, world travel
It’s important to keep in mind that this is a message for you, and if you’re not a numerologist then the numbers may mean something completely different!
Perhaps you see the number 9 quite often and in different iterations. Your receipt comes out to $9.99, the address of your friend’s new house is 599, the highway you take to get to her new house is the 9, etc. Looking into the numerological explanation of the number 9 might sound nice to you but it doesn’t ring a bell, so you’re not sure what the message is or who’s sending it.
As you’re driving home you think about a fond memory from high school when you played on the volleyball team, then it hits you! Your number on the team was 9! You had been thinking recently of joining an intramural volleyball team, so maybe the message has less to do with expansion, endings, education and world travel and more so to do with signing up for the league.
The bottom line: it’s far more important to think about what these numbers mean to you than to seek an outside source of information (cough cough, stop googling what Angel Numbers mean).

At the end of each day go through your list of Angel Numbers and spend some time mulling them over. I highly recommend journaling here because thoughts in the mind can often get tangled up in one another, but by sorting them out and putting them down on paper you’re better able to understand them.
When you feel like you might understand what a particular Angel Number means for you, try saying it aloud. There is something magickal that happens when we speak our thoughts; you’ll instantly know whether or not you’re right.
That’s the big question, isn’t it? Who, or what is sending these Angel Numbers out to you?
The short answer is that there is honestly no way of knowing. We are bound by certain natural laws that prevent us from proving, with absolute certainty, who or where these messages are coming from. Now, does that mean that the whole thing is a load of BS? Nope. If we held that kind of thinking, no important discoveries would ever be made! Humans are curious and there is more we don’t know about this world than what we do. Stay curious, stay open but know that “truth” is relative.
If you believe in an afterlife, it could be that your loved ones who have passed are sending you messages of comfort. If you believe in something more like a universal spiritual energy tying us all together, then Angel Numbers might be an indicator that you are tapped in and on the spiritual path. If you believe in gods and deities, spiritual beings, then it may be messages from them meant to guide you on your spiritual journey.
If you ask me, it’s less important to know why we are seeing these numbers or who might be sending them than it is to simply observe them. More often than not, when I see an Angel Number I consider it a “hello” from the Universe. So, try saying hello back next time you see your numbers.
