The Best Moon Astrology Books

There are thousands of astrology books available, including texts that go back over a millennium. Most of the books offer insights about special techniques, timing, and various uses of astrology in daily life, relationships, and career. And, of course, there are many, many beginner books, which offer the foundational, “all-in-one” knowledge to get started with astrology at a level that is far more sophisticated than the daily horoscope. This article will recommend books about the Moon.

The Moon

The Moon represents how you give and prefer to receive love. Its placement in sign and house reveals how we want to feel and be felt, spiritually speaking, by others. In my case, my way to give and receive love is expressed through air (Libra) in my quest for spirituality (12th house). Air’s expression is analytical, observational, and cerebral.

In Libra, the element acts fairly, decisively, and harmoniously. So, my key phrase is “give and seek love with those who share your desire for balance and peacefulness” In short, I find my loving guidance serving my spiritual purpose by forming relationships with people who can help me balance myself and who I can help find balance.

Since the Moon passes through signs very quickly, in 2 to 2 ½ days, it is often best to study it in your chart as a key point shaping your personality as well as through the special calculation of secondary progression, which treats each day after you were born as a year of life.

In doing so, the Moon slows down, progressing through a sign every 2 to 2 ½ years, creating a cycle that matches with the Saturn return, bringing the Moon back to its degree of origin around 29 years.

The Best Moon Astrology Books

There are numerous books on The Moon, below are the three I use the most in my professional practice.

New Moon Astrology: The Secret of Astrological Timing to Make All Your Dreams Come True by Jan Spiller

If you have run across my work on AskAstrology before, then you might know that I write a monthly article about New Moon Wishing, which explains how to apply Spiller’s technique at the time of each New Moon. Spiller is a wonderful writer and expert astrologer, so this book is really a must-have for your astrology library. Published in 2001, this text is as useful today as it was when it first came out.

From the back of the book:

In this breakthrough book, master astrologer Jan Spiller reveals the secrets of harnessing the Moon’s astonishing power to make your desires a reality. Based on ancient rites and philosophy as well as Spiller’s own vast astrological experience, here are practical, step-by-step instructions on how to express your wishes in any area at a “magic” moment – a personal power period when astrological forces are in motion to help you realize your dreams. Using the special Moon chart included here, and with Spiller’s, amazingly effective guidance discover:

  • How to use the potent New Moon each month to time your power wishes.
  • How to locate the three to five weeks each year when you personally are in a position of tremendous empowerment to achieve your goals.
  • Which special Moons throughout the year help grant specific wishes, such as attracting money, meeting a new lover, or traveling to exciting places!
  • How to use the destiny revealed by your astrological chart along with the New Moon to achieve an energy shift — a power surge to help you succeed in weight loss, relationships, career, intimacy, and more!

Moon Phase Astrology: The Lunar Key to Your Destiny by Raven Kaldera

Published in 2011, this book is one I use regularly when preparing charts for clients. It is immensely helpful when determining the meaning of their birth phase, as well as their current progressed phase. For example, my Sun and Moon were 178 degrees apart at my birth, giving me a Gibbous Moon in Libra, the “Lover’s Moon”. But my birth Moon is also close enough to the Full Moon phase for me to consider it as well, and it is the “Artist’s Moon”. My current progressed Moon is in the Waning Quarter Phase in Aquarius and is known as the Heretic’s Moon, which will be in effect for another 6 months for me.

From the back cover of the book:

The Moon’s ever-changing phases offer a way to deepen our understanding of our natal Moon sign as well as the Moon’s day-to-day influence on our emotional tides. Through its 8 phases and its wandering dance through each of the 12 signs of the Zodiac–from the Infant’s Moon (the New Moon in Aries) to the Storyteller’s Moon (the Full Moon in Gemini) to the Prophet’s Moon (the waning Balsamic Moon in Aquarius) –the Moon shares its story in 96 different ways.

Telling the stories of the heart of all 96 Moon phase and Moon sign combinations, Raven Kaldera explains the creative gifts and emotional challenges bestowed upon those born under each Moon archetype as well as how to nurture the positive traits and improve–or at least discourage–the negative ones.

Published in 2010, this book is an excellent resource for understanding the natal and progressed Moon. This book is another one I often like to consult when preparing charts for clients. Herring is an insightful writer, who articulates the many interpretations of the Moon in the twelve signs very well.

She certainly hits the mark with my Moon in Libra when she says, “you feel nurtured when you can bounce ideas off another person to get their perspective, as well as having a friend or lover to share your experiences.” (33)

From the back cover of the book:

Your moon sign represents your emotional nature and lights the way toward profound spiritual growth. With Astrology of the Moon, you can identify and better understand your core emotional needs, learn to fulfill them, and make positive choices for a more rewarding, spiritually enriched life.

Illuminating the natal and progressed moon relationship, this information-packed astrology book explains the moon’s powerful energetic potential in relation to the signs, houses, planets, and aspects. In an easy-to-use “cookbook” format designed to help you quickly look up your moon sign, Amy Herring reveals your ever-evolving emotional needs when it comes to love, family life, spiritual health, career planning, and more.

You will also find many practical activities and ideas to maximize your creative potential and fulfill your essential needs so you can create happiness at every stage of life.

These books are three of the best ones to own and use in your astrological studies or practice.
