Exploring the Coronavirus with a 10-Card Reading – Part 4

Tarot cards are excellent tools for insight and revelation.  As a professional reader, I work with clients on a weekly basis, doing readings to help them navigate life.  With so much happening with regard to the outbreak of COVID-19, I thought it would be helpful to do a tarot reading about COVID-19 for the AskAstrology readership.

This is the fourth reading; Ask Astrology published the first one on March 9, 2020.

The Question, the Method, and the Spread

The question I keep asking is, “what do the visitors to Ask Astrology need to know about the COVID-19 coronavirus?”  I have over 75 decks in my tarot and oracle card collection and I chose to use the Haindl Tarot by Hermann Haindl.   

When I do a reading for a client, I ask them questions for each card draw.  For this reading, I decided to select 10 cards.  The layout I chose was the traditional Celtic Cross, shown below:

Question 1: What Does the Readership Need to Know Right Now

The card selected is the Mother of Swords in the South (Queen of Swords – Nut):

The Goddess Nut, from Egyptian mythology, represents this card.  She is the Goddess of the sky and astronomy. Astrologically, this card represents Aquarius. She is clear of thought and has a long-range vision, so her message is about seeing the current situation from a distance, with an observing mind.  It is important right now to face circumstances with logic and analysis rather than emotion. She does not panic; she reasons out solutions.

Question 2: What is the Challenge We Need to be Aware of?

The card selected is the Mother of Cups in the North (Queen of Cups – Venus of Willendorf):

Venus of Willendorf is a figurine discovered in 1908 and dated back to 20,000 to 30,000 BCE.  Astrologically, this card represents Scorpio and is about the conviction of our emotions.  This current period of crisis is pitting our understanding and reasoning in the world (Mother of Swords) with our deep emotions.  We must find a way to feel our emotions and learn deep human truth without falling into depression or severe anxiety.

Question 3: What is Obvious?

The card selected is the 5 of Swords (Defeat):

The 5 swords above are all broken and the hexagram is number 47, “confining”.  We know that many aspects of life have been broken and we must face a new reality.  Will we try to pick up the pieces of these broken swords and repair them, knowing they are forever damaged?  Or, will we seek to forge new swords and new ways of thinking.  The 5 is a pivot point, we can attempt to pivot back or we can pivot forward.

Question 4: What is Hidden?

The card selected is the Emperor:

The Emperor represents the masculine divine, and leadership.  He is the King of the kings that make up the Minor Arcana.  We need leadership that truly brings a healthy change to society and addresses problems in a mature and responsible way.  Great leaders emerge in times of crisis and weak or false leaders crumble or make matters worse.  We know we need great leadership at this time; perhaps you are meant to be one of those great leaders.

Question 5: What Do We Need to Know from the Past to Help Us in the Present?

The card selected is 4 of Wands (Perfection):

Maybe there has never been a time of perfection, but there have been times when civilization did make healthy and productive moves forward, that destabilized and then re-stabilized civilization.  The hexagram is number 64, the last one in the sequence, and it is known as “Before Completion”.  That moment before something is complete is perfection, because once complete, deterioration begins. We can review history for clues about how to deal with the present and look to the future, with positive goals in mind.

Question 6: What Do We Need to Know for Guidance Going Forward?

The card selected is the 2 of Swords (Peace):

Like the first card, the Mother of Swords, this card indicates a need to be at peace with our decisions and what we learn and know as the world goes through these immense changes.  The hexagram is number 11, “Pervading”, which means to be present throughout and “in every part”.  We must acknowledge that the virus and social changes will pervade our lives and eventually shape and become part of the new normal.

Question 7: What is Purpose of this Virus, Spiritually Speaking?

The card selected is the 3 of Cups (Overflowing):

This card may be difficult to feel or see in the world at this time, but there is a chance for coming together and celebrating that may prove to be essential to the spiritual purpose of the many crises happening all at once: health, financial, and social.  There is a chance to fix significant problems in all three to create more abundance in the future based on more secure and stable beliefs and rules.  A life of debt, social division, and incomplete health care are false, and the virus is showing the world how much it needs healthy abundance, not borrowed abundance.  The hexagram on this card is number 28, “Great Exceeding”.

Question 8: How Do We Fulfill the Purpose Positively?

The card selected is the 7 of Wands (Courage):

The 7 of Wands is very appropriate in this position; we will need courage and focus to move forward in these difficult times, which will likely remain chaotic and challenging until, at least, the conclusion of the US Presidential election.  Everyday courage is now our message, to ourselves and those around us.  The hexagram is number 40, “Deliverance”.  Even now, we can likely see what will be necessary and how we must untangle our world for more direct action in support of the people around us and our community.

Question 9: What are our Hopes and Fears?

The card selected is the 10 of Cups (Success):

Our hope is emotional fulfillment and true success, that we can share with everyone.  Our fear is a lasting defeat shown in the 5 of Swords in the position of “What is Obvious?”.  The hexagram is number 15, “Humbling” or “Modesty”.  We can achieve and experience true emotional well-being when we are successful and satisfied.  Longing and immediate gratification needs often keep us far away from the immense pleasure of this card.

Question 10: What is an Action to Consider Taking at this Time?

The card selected is the Wheel of Fortune:

Unfortunately, we must continue to wait to react.  There remains so much still unfolding that any attempts at predicting or expecting a certain future outcome are futile.  We are stuck, now more than ever, living in the moment, waiting for the next shift in circumstances to know how to react.  But life remains more fated than free will at this time.
