Your life path number is like the genre of your life. Is it a drama about family, or a romantic comedy where you get the girl in the end? Since this is the only number in your numerology chart that can never change, your life path number can take on a few shapes throughout your life.
It’s helpful to imagine each number on a spectrum, where one end is filled with head learned lessons and the other side is the positive outcomes. In your teens and twenties you’re more likely to experience the “low vibe” aspects of your life path number. As time goes on, and more wisdom is gained, you start to reap the benefits of your life path number.
Your life path number is derived from the numbers of your birth date. Numerology utilizes basic addition to solve for the base number. The base number is the single digit number you get from adding all the numbers of your birth date together, but there are a few different ways to do it. Since it’s basic addition, the base number will never change, it’s more a matter of personal preference.
Adding Across
The first method is called adding across and, like all things in numerology, it is aptly named. You’ll write out all the numbers of your birth date and then place a + in between each. So you should now have a 6-8 number addition sequence that looks like this M+M+D+D+Y+Y+Y+Y. Let’s look at an example date of December 31st 1996.
12/31/1996
1+2+3+1+1+9+9+6=32
Next we’ll add 3 into 2 in order to get a single digit base number of 5 (because 3+2=5)

However, look what happens when we change the birth year from 1996 to 1997
12/31/1997
1+2+3+1+1+9+9+7=33
Since 33 is a repeating number, AKA a master number, we leave it as is.
Adding Down
The second commonly used method is called adding down. In this method you’ll want to create shorter addition sequences by adding the numbers of your birth month, day and year together separately. The equation looks like this: (M+M)+(D+D)+(Y+Y+Y+Y).
Keep in mind that you are going to continue adding down until each number is only one digit. Year numbers will often add up to a double digit, so you’ll need to keep adding those digits into one another until you have only one.

Let’s look at our example birth date of December 31st 1996 once again.
12/31/1996
(1+2)+(3+1)+(1+9+9+6)
because 1+9+9+6 equals 25, you’ll need to add 2 and 5 into one another before you move on to the next step.
3+4+7=14
1+4=5
Both methods work well, just use the one that makes the most sense to you!
