Marriage: Where is Juno in Your Chart?

Traditional astrology consists mainly of nine points (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto).  Recently, newer beginner astrology books include Chiron as a staple of the astrology system.

Asteroids have also started to become more popular and used in contemporary astrological charts, but one of the first comprehensive books about the four largest asteroids – Juno, Vesta, Ceres, and Pallas Athene – was written in 1985, Asteroid Goddesses by Demetra George. The inclusion of new points for chart readings is only now taking hold.

This article will discuss Juno, which rules duty, commitment, and marriage.

Energy Point Type: Asteroid

Element: Fire

Key Phrase: Way of Duty

Juno represents your Way of Duty.  Its placement in sign and house reveals how we make commitments that we intend to endure and where we are willing to make sacrifices to see that they endure.

Juno is an ancient Roman goddess, the protector and special counselor of the state. A daughter of Saturn, she is the wife of Jupiter and the mother of Mars, Vulcan, Bellona, and Juventas. She is the Roman equivalent of Hera, queen of the gods in Greek mythology; like Hera, her sacred animal was the peacock. She is the goddess of marriage.

She also represents status in the world and the importance of status.  This point would make an excellent co-ruler for Sagittarius and the 9th House of Beliefs and Mastery of Knowledge, along with her husband, Jupiter, which is the traditional and modern ruler of this sign and house.

Juno in the Chart

In my chart, my Way of Duty is expressed through water (Scorpio) in my quest for identity (1st house).

Water’s expression is emotional and imaginative.  In Scorpio, the element acts intensely, transformatively, and unrelentingly.  So, my key phrase is “Your Way of Duty manifests through your intense and truth-seeking quest for and attraction to penetrating and emotionally transformative identity development.”

In short, I am committed to deep, powerful identity transformation and understanding about who I am and want to be.  Also, I make strong emotional commitments to romantic partners, enduring even after the relationship has ended.

When considering the placement of your own Juno, think about the way you commit (represented by the element of the sign Juno is in) and where you want status and need to make commitments (house placement).

Consider Juno in Taurus in the 7th house, “Your Way of Duty manifests through your steadfast and persistent quest for and attraction to enduring and secure partnerships and life teachers.”  Here is an individual who either really needs to commit to any type of partnership (friend, lover, co-worker, and so on) or learn the lesson of proper commitments to others.

This placement is especially strong since the energy of Taurus is all about enduring and persisting and the 7th house is all about making connections.  Juno in this placement creates a powerful energy alignment, but the strength of the placement is also its greatest weakness. If healthy, this individual will be steadfast and doggedly reliable; but if the responsibility is not appropriate or balanced, this individual can sacrifice too much and “over” commit.

Juno and Marriage or Commitment to a Partner

If you know your placement of Juno, then you will know an important part of your design where duty and commitment in a relationship are concerned.  Knowing the placement of Juno in your partner’s chart and how they commit energetically will help you understand what kind of marriage or long-term commitment you can have together.

Juno in the Signs

Juno in Aries

This placement is challenging since Aries is all about freedom and independence.  There is counter-intuitive energy that indicates that this person will want to be able to come and go as they please in a committed relationship.  If they feel they have their freedom within or because of the relationship, they will be intensely loyal.

Juno in Taurus

This placement is very strong since Taurus craves security and stability.  Individuals with this Juno will be steadfast and enduring.  They will take any commitment seriously and expect their partner to do the same.

Juno in Gemini

Like Aries, this placement is challenging.  If the relationship fails to be stimulating or lacks in communication, it will be difficult for the Gemini Juno to remain committed.  The “idea” of commitment may not hold against the reality of a stagnant or predictable relationship.

Juno in Cancer

This placement is also very strong because Cancer craves emotional security, nurturing, and the haven of enduring love.  If in love, and committed, this sign will handle the “for worse” part of the marriage vows as easily as the “for better”.

Juno in Leo

This placement is tricky since Leo is a fixed sign and does want consistency but has fire energy which needs creativity and activity to stay engaged.  There is a need for the marriage to present well out in the world; so long as it does the Leo Juno will happily do its duty in marriage.

Juno in Virgo

This placement is not as grand as some of the other signs; the status part is not as important to the Virgo energy.  However, the practical aspects of marriage certainly are.  So long as practical care is given to the relationship, they will be committed.

Juno in Libra

Since Juno rules marriage and Libra is the traditional sign for marriage, this placement is very strong.  These individuals will not enter a marriage without looking at the binding legal aspect and understanding the importance of marriage as part of the fabric of society.

Juno in Scorpio

Like any point in a fixed sign, especially one that deals with duty and commitment, the combination is sure to create an enduring, if tumultuous, marriage.  Scorpio is, after all, the sign of death and rebirth. Expect this person to have intense feelings about the person they commit to.

Juno in Sagittarius

This placement is extremely strong since the energy involves the deepest beliefs about what marriage should be and why.  This person will see marriage as a long journey, to be taken together through the joys and sorrows of the entire commitment.

Juno in Capricorn

Once again, the status aspect will be important to a person with this Juno.  It practically screams “power couple”.  The duty and commitment should provide and produce an increase for both partners, in a measurable and successful way.

Juno in Aquarius

This placement can struggle with the disconnect between the ideal and reality.  Often the marriage can be or needs to be unconventional or even revolutionary.  If the relationship is too “common” or predictable it is unlikely that the marriage will endure.

Juno in Pisces

Simply put, this needs to be a marriage in spirit and of spirit.  This partner will commit and endure so long as they feel the relationship has some kind of soul-level duty or even past life thread, that is very strong.
