Embracing the Journey, Not Just the Destination

Journeys are more than reaching a destination. They are a chance for growth, rest, and rediscovery. I’m about to embark on a journey through Europe and South America, and I know how stressful travel can be. Traveling can be so enriching, but it is quite common to feel a bit of travel fear and anxiety. Embracing the journey, not just the destination. Here are some of my tips for relaxing before and during a journey:

Before the Journey

Going on a journey is no joke and can sometimes feel overwhelming. Stress can take over quickly. But, it’s important to remember that the journey is a key part of life. Instead of just focusing on the destination, try to embrace the journey. Embrace all the experiences it has to offer. Here are some things you can do before your journey to help you relax.

1. Be Prepared

Make sure to do your research first. Have a clear plan of where you’re going, what you want to see, and how you’ll get there. Take any stress off your shoulders. Do this by giving yourself enough time to get all your documents. Also, to get your flights and accommodation in order. You can also pack in advance. This avoids last-minute stress and anxiety from forgetting items.

2. Take Care of Your Body

Leading up to your journey, it’s important to take care of your physical and mental well-being. You might go to a place with lots more walking. So, add some exercise to your daily routine. This will prepare your body for the journey’s demands. The physical readiness can help ease any stress or fatigue during the journey.

3. Relaxation Techniques

You should do this tip regardless of whether you’re about to start a journey. You should practice relaxation techniques. Having time and space each day for stillness and contemplation can really help. It reduces anxiety over time. Learning techniques like breathwork or meditation can change your day-to-day life. They also help while you are on a journey.

4. Visit Your Health Shop

Before your trip, consider visiting a health shop or pharmacy. You can stock up on natural remedies or supplements there. They can help you relax and reduce travel anxiety. You can get some Bach Rescue Remedy, Ashwagandha, or Scelitium. They’ll support your mental and emotional well-being during the journey. Also, you can try using essential oils. For example, lavender or chamomile can help calm your nerves. You can also get a crystal, such as amethyst or rose quartz, to carry with you. It will add calming and grounding effects to the journey.

5. Create a Playlist or Download Audiobooks

Make a playlist of soothing music. Or, download some audiobooks to listen to on the journey. Listening to calming music or an engaging audiobook can distract your mind. It can also create calm during the journey. You might learn something new. Words and music can take you to another world. This always works for me!

6. Rest to Embrace the Journey

Make sure to focus on resting before and during your journey. Getting a good night’s sleep before you leave to start your journey can help you feel refreshed. It can also help you feel energized. Sleep is a miracle cure for almost anything, so make sure you prioritize it!

During The Journey

During the journey, keep using strategies to relax and reduce stress. Here are some of the best ways to relax during the journey:

1. Fix Your Mindset

Adopt a positive outlook throughout your journey as it can really help to soothe any anxiety. Remember, minor hiccups are to be expected and can make the adventure a lot more interesting.

Whenever I am on either a plane, car, or train journey, I make sure to have enough water and snacks with me. Staying hydrated and eating well will help keep your body and mind nourished. This reduces the chances of feeling tired or cranky during the journey.

3. Breathe and Meditate

If you are on a plane, bus, or train journey, you probably have a lot of time on your hands. Why not use this time to relax and practice deep breathing or meditation? Take slow, deep breaths. Focus on your breath. This can calm your nervous system and reduce anxiety.

4. Enjoy the Journey, Not Just the Destination

The key is to understand that travel is about the experience along the way. It’s not just about your end destination. Each moment of your journey holds value and many lessons. Try to enjoy your experience and recognize how lucky you are to have the opportunity to travel.
