3 Great Love Aspects

The 3 Great Love Aspects between Two Charts

Astrology has many uses and techniques; one of the most popular uses is synastry, which is the term to describe how two charts interact with each other.  We all have the same points in our charts: the Sun in a sign, the Moon in a sign, Mercury in a sign, and so on.  When we get together with someone our energy designs (our charts) interact.

This article will look at the 3 great love aspects in a chart: trine Moons, opposing Ascendants, and conjunct Venus/Mars.  Any one of these will boost a relationship; two gets you into soul mate territory, and all three is a “match made in heaven”.

What is Synastry Astrology?

It is probably easier to show it visually rather than write a lengthy explanation.  Below you will see a single image of two charts, one on the inside and another going around the outside.  There are two images to show what the relationship looks like when person A is on the inside and person B is on the outside, then the reverse.

These were randomly generated charts. As you can see, all the same points appear in different signs throughout the two charts.  When we look at them together, we have the chance to see the kinds of energy dynamics that will take effect when they form a connection, whether as lovers, friends, or family members.

Reading the Synastry of Two People

A fair amount of my work as a professional astrologer involves relationship charts reading, and I always start with the Moons and work my way through the other points.  Often clients, or people I meet in public, who find out I am an astrologer, will say something like, “I am a Leo and read somewhere that I should never date a Scorpio” or “I am a Leo and should only date fire and air signs, like Aries or Gemini”.  Then they ask, “Is that true?”

While it is true that some signs challenge one another and others flow, any sign can “get along” with another sign depending on the maturity of the individuals.  There are certainly plenty of examples of successful and happy Leo/Scorpio couples and failed Aries/Leo couples.  The signs do not guarantee success or failure, they just reveal how energy will generally interact in any relationship.

Please keep in mind that flowing energy is not the same as positive energy.  Flow occurs when two points aspect or align with each other in certain ways and close to the same degree.  For example, if I have my Mercury in Leo at 12 degrees and you have your Mercury in Aries at 13 degrees, our Mercurys will trine and easily flow since they are both in fire signs.

That is great if we communicate well and positively with our fiery approach, but not so great if one or both of us chooses to be argumentative all the time, picking verbal fights constantly.  And no matter how problematic the communication energy between us, the flow will keep us communicating and trying to “win” our points whether the relationship is healthy or not.

Trine Moons: Flowing Emotions

The Moon represents how we give and receive love, so it makes perfect sense that Moons that share the same element will flow easily with one another.  Each element has 3 trine combinations:

  • Air: Libra to Aquarius, Aquarius to Gemini, and Gemini to Libra
  • Earth: Capricorn to Taurus, Taurus to Virgo, and Virgo to Capricorn
  • Fire: Aries to Leo, Leo to Sagittarius, and Sagittarius to Aries
  • Water: Cancer to Scorpio, Scorpio to Pisces, and Pisces to Cancer

Why is the trine better than the conjunction?  In other words, why isn’t Libra/Libra better than Libra/Aquarius or Libra/Gemini.  The compliment of the modalities works better since the energy flows – cardinal (Libra) to fixed (Aquarius) and cardinal (Libra) to mutable (Gemini).  Quite simply same sign energy, while still much better than opposing, square, sextile, inconjunct, or semi-sextile, can “butt heads”.

If you run your chart with another person and discover that your Moons trine, there will be an emotional flow between the two of you which makes this aspect one of the 3 great aspects in a relationship reading between two charts. If the orb of influence is less than 6 degrees, even better!  Trine by sign is very good; trine by degree is fantastic!

Opposing Ascendants (AS)/Descendants (DS)

This alignment indicates that the charts complement one another by house and sign.  If you have an Aries Ascendant and your partner has a Libra Ascendant, then what you are giving to your partner is what they are seeking, and vice versa.  You see, the Ascendant represents what you bring to the relationship and the Descendant represents what you seek from a relationship.  Here are the 12 AS/DS combinations:

  • Aries (brings independence)/Libra (seeks partnership)
  • Taurus (brings stability)/Scorpio (seeks transformation)
  • Gemini (brings curiosity)/Sagittarius (seeks authority)
  • Cancer (brings nurturing)/Capricorn (seeks responsibility)
  • Leo (brings leadership)/Aquarius (seeks community)
  • Virgo (brings practicality)/Pisces (seeks imagination)
  • Libra (brings partnership)/Aries (seeks independence)
  • Scorpio (brings transformation)/Taurus (seeks stability)
  • Sagittarius (brings authority)/Gemini (seeks curiosity)
  • Capricorn (brings responsibility)/Cancer (seeks nurturing)
  • Aquarius (brings community)/Leo (seeks leadership)
  • Pisces (brings imagination)/Virgo (seeks practicality)

In order to know your AS/DS axis, you must know your birth time.  If you do not know your birth time it can be determined by using a technique called rectification or through muscle testing, which is what I prefer to do with my clients.

Conjunct Venus/Mars

Another intense connection occurs if one person’s Venus is conjunct with the other person’s Mars, it does not matter if the Venus is in a woman’s chart and Mars is in a man’s chart since many relationships are between two people of the same gender.  Venus represents how we relate and Mars represents our drive.  In more basic terms Venus is our sexual reception and Mars is our sexual penetration.

If these points happen to be in the same sign, or even better, close to the same degree, then the energy between the two individuals will be intensely attractive.  In fact, this could be a very lusty combination for two people, especially if the signs involved are Scorpio, Taurus, and Aries.

If you want to know if your relationship has any of these great aspects, then you should consider getting a professional reading done.  A professional astrology reading between two people will definitely shed light on the relationship and how you interact together.
