When Life Feels Heavy: How to Know It’s Time for a Change
March 23, 2025 | Katrina van Wyk
Let’s be honest, sometimes life feels like a weighted blanket that’s just a tad too heavy. You are not necessarily drowning in misery, but the joy just feels a little muffled. That, my friend, is often the universe nudging you towards a change. But how do you know it is time to shake things up? This article will help you decipher those subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs.
Your “Meh” Meter is Off the Charts
The first sign that you might need a change is a pervasive sense of “meh.” Is your enthusiasm for life hovering around the level of lukewarm tap water? Are you just existing instead of truly living? Do you find yourself scrolling endlessly, searching for something to spark a flicker of excitement? Apathy can creep in slowly, like a vine strangling your zest for life, and if you are not careful, you will wake up one day wondering where all the joy went. If your “meh” meter is pegged, it is a good indicator that something in your life needs to shift.
You Are Grumpy and Moody
Has your inner Grinch taken permanent residence? Are you snapping at loved ones over minor things? Are you responding to everything with a world-weary sign and eye roll? While a little cynicism can be charming, constant negativity is a sign that you are not vibing with your current situation. Take a step back and ask yourself “what would it take for me to start feeling better and more positive?”

You Have Started to Drink More
Have you found yourself reaching for a glass of wine (or something stronger) more often than usual? While a drink or two can be a way to unwind, a marked increase in alcohol consumption can be a sign that you’re trying to numb uncomfortable emotions or cope with stress. It’s crucial to differentiate between occasional social drinking and using alcohol as a crutch. It’s important to examine the reasons behind the increase and consider healthier ways to manage stress and emotional well-being.
Your Dreams Involve Escaping
We all have those fantasy escape scenarios. But if your daydreams consistently involve abandoning your responsibilities and running away to a remote location (even one with excellent internet access!) it could be a sign that you are craving a change, even if subconsciously. Ask yourself what aspects of your current reality are you trying to escape? Is it the work you hate? A relationship? Or the place where you live?
You’ve Become a Master Procrastinator
Suddenly, doing laundry sounds more appealing than tackling important tasks? Procrastination is often a symptom of avoidance. If you are constantly putting things off it may be because you are dreading them. Explore the underlying reasons for your procrastination: Are you feeling overwhelmed, uninspired, or simply burnt out? Be honest with yourself and ask what are you really avoiding?
Your Body is Sending You Smoke Signals
Stress and unhappiness can manifest in physical symptoms. Unexplained aches and pains, headaches, digestive issues, and chronic fatigue can all be signs that your body is screaming “change something now”. Pay attention to these physical signals and consult a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical conditions. Your body is trying to tell you something.
You’re Stuck in a Groundhog Day Loop
Does every day feel exactly the same? Wake up, work, eat, sleep, repeat? Routine can be comforting, but when it becomes monotonous and devoid of excitement, it’s a recipe for stagnation. Try to break free from the predictability of your daily routine and introduce new experiences or activities. Inject some spontaneity into your life! Take a different route to work, try a new recipe, or finally sign up for that pottery class you’ve been eyeing.

You’re Comparing Yourself to Everyone on Social Media (and Losing)
Social media is a highlight reel, not real life. If you find yourself constantly comparing your behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s carefully curated online persona, it’s time to log off and reconnect with your own values and goals. What truly matters to you? Focus on your own journey and celebrate your own unique accomplishments, rather than getting caught up in the endless comparison trap.
Life Feels Heavy, So, What Now?
If you recognize several of these signs, it’s time to take action. Start small. Change can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be drastic. Recognizing the need for change is the first step. From there, start small, be patient with yourself, and celebrate every step you take toward a more fulfilling life.
You can change your attitude towards stressors by dwelling on the positive aspects of a person or situation. If one strategy isn’t effective, you can always try a different one.
And there are many, like pausing before making decisions, and recognizing the physical warning signs of stress. You could change some of your lifestyle habits. You could start with something simple like taking a walk in nature, listening to music, or spending time with loved ones.
You could do down the spirituality route and find yourself in meditation or yoga. Mindfulness practices can help you become more aware of your thoughts and emotions, allowing you to respond to stress in a more conscious and controlled way.
And sometimes it is okay to just stop and give yourself a break. You can make different choices for yourself and you don’t have to always stick to the path you are on.

Change can be scary, but it’s also incredibly liberating. So, take a deep breath, trust your gut, and get ready to create a life that feels a little less heavy and a lot more joyful!
Astrology has been my passion since I first got my hands on a Linda Goodman book as a child. I have always found it fascinating being able to understand people on a much deeper level thanks to the knowledge the stars provide us. I spent most of my 20s in the modeling industry, but in 2017 I decided to follow my gut as well as my passion and enrolled myself in an Astrology short course, and from then on, I was hooked! I ended up doing a three-year certificate course under the guidance of esteemed Astrologer, Rod Suskin. Through my passion for Astrology, I also found a passion for writing and helping others understand themselves better using this ancient art form.
