The Various Types of Moons and their Astrological Meaning
December 12, 2024 | Philip Young, PhD
The Moon’s many phases and types hold profound significance, both astronomically and astrologically, symbolizing cycles of growth, release, and renewal. Astronomical types, such as the Supermoon (when the Moon appears larger due to its proximity to Earth) bring unique energy. Traditional monthly names, like Harvest Moon and Wolf Moon, reflect seasonal rhythms. Meanwhile lunar phases—New, Waxing, Full, Waning, and Balsamic—guide us in setting intentions, embracing change, and seeking balance. Together, these lunar aspects create a rich framework for understanding time, intuition, and personal growth. Let’s see the types of moons and the astrological meaning of these different moons.
Types of Moon
A “type” of moon describes certain unique astronomical events like a Black Moon. A Black Moon happens when there is a second New Moon in a month. One will happen on December 30th, 2024.
Supermoon
When the Moon is at its closest point to Earth, it appears larger and brighter, amplifying the emotional intensity of the lunar phase. Astrologically, it magnifies the energy of the Full or New Moon, making it a powerful time for manifestation and emotional clarity. There will be three Supermoons in 2025. The first will be on October 7th, in Aries. The second will be on November 5th, in Taurus. And the final one will be on December 4th, in Gemini.

Blood Moon
A total lunar eclipse gives the Moon a reddish hue, symbolizing endings and transformation. Astrologically, it marks a time of profound release, signaling a shift in perspective and encouraging us to let go of old patterns. There will be two Blood Moons in 2025. The first will happen on March 13th, in Virgo. And the second will happen on September 7th, in Pisces.
The second New Moon in a month is a Black Moon; it represents a rare chance for new beginnings. Astrologically, it’s a potent time for setting deep intentions and starting fresh projects with heightened focus. There will not be a Black Moon in 2025.
Blue Moon
The second Full Moon in a single calendar month, a Blue Moon is rare and symbolizes a unique opportunity for growth and insight. Astrologically, it offers a chance to gain clarity and resolve issues that need extra attention, highlighting unexpected or once-in-a-lifetime moments. There will not be a Blue Moon in 2025.

Phases of the Moon
The phases of the Moon are the changing appearances of the Moon as seen from Earth. The moons phases happen because of its orbit around our planet and the varying angles of sunlight reflecting off its surface. As the Moon moves through its cycle different portions of its illuminated half are visible, creating distinct phases.
The Moon is not visible as it aligns with the Sun, representing a time of new beginnings. Astrologically, it’s ideal for setting intentions, planting seeds for future goals, and starting fresh projects with a clean slate.
Waxing Quarter Moon
The Waxing Quarter Moon occurs when the Moon is half-bright during its growing phase. This moment signals a time for decision-making and taking action. Astrologically, it represents a period of overcoming obstacles and making necessary adjustments to move forward with our goals.
Waxing Gibbous Moon
In the Waxing Gibbous phase, the Moon is almost fully bright, marking a time of preparation and refinement. Astrologically, this phase invites us to fine-tune our plans and seek greater clarity. It’s a moment to make final adjustments and ensure everything is in place before the peak of the Full Moon.
Full Moon
The Moon is brightest, symbolizing completion, clarity, and peak energy. Astrologically, it’s a powerful time for releasing what no longer serves you, celebrating achievements, and gaining insight into your emotions.

Waning Gibbous Moon
The Waning Gibbous Moon occurs shortly after the Full Moon when the illumination begins to decrease. This phase symbolizes a time of gratitude and sharing insights gained during the Full Moon. Astrologically, it’s a period to reflect, evaluate outcomes, and begin releasing any excess.
Waning Quarter Moon
The Waning Quarter Moon also appears half-bright but during its diminishing phase. This signals a time for introspection and reflection on the progress made. Astrologically, it’s a period to confront challenges that arose after the Full Moon. Time to make necessary changes, and begin the process of letting go of what no longer serves us.
Balsamic Moon
The final phase before the New Moon, when the Moon is a thin crescent, represents closure and reflection. Astrologically, it’s a time for letting go, introspection, and healing as you prepare for a new cycle of growth.
Monthly Common Names
The common names of each monthly Moon come from traditions of Indigenous tribes, ancient cultures, and farmers. They named these moons based on seasonal events, natural cycles, or activities. These moons names reflect the agricultural, hunting, and environmental themes of each month, offering a way to connect with nature’s rhythms.
