The phases of the moon are one of the most fascinating astronomical behaviors we can observe with the naked eye and a deeply rich source of thought and interpretation for Astrology. Among the 8 phases – New, Waxing Crescent, 1st Quarter Half, Waxing Gibbous, Full, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter Half, and Waning Crescent – the New and Full Moons capture most of the attention. This article will look at the current New Moon and suggest a “creation activity” associated with the sign of this New Moon, based on the work of the late astrologer Jan Spiller from her book: New Moon Astrology: The Secret of Astrological Timing to Make All Your Dreams Come True.
New Moon – Let’s Start Something!
The New Moon for June will occur on the 3rd at 12 degrees and 33 minutes in the sign of Gemini; in my Eastern Standard Time zone it will happen at 6:02 am. It takes 29.5 days from one New Moon to the next, spending approximately 2 and ½ days in a sign. Just before the New Moon begins, the last 3 days of the previous moon phase (Waning Crescent) is known as the Balsamic Moon. Those days are ideal for meditating, reflecting, and releasing; all in preparation for the New Moon.
The first 12 to 24 hours after the New Moon begins is an ideal time to initiate energy. We will explore, specifically, each New Moon in a sign using Jan Spiller’s concepts and suggested actions later in this article to see how best to take advantage of this period of inspiration and inception. New Moon energy is ideal for a first date, trying something you have not done before, going somewhere for the first time, or creating with art and words. Each month, if you keep track of the New Moon, you should endeavor to do something new or begin something by aligning with the “newness” of the Moon as the energy of “right timing”. You may even go back and look at some of the most recent New Moons and see how those days or that period of time reflected some “newness” for you.
When I look back to May 4th on my Google calendar, the previous New Moon, I had a new beginning happen the next day within the first 24 hours. I met with a couple that runs a digital marketing business and gifted them each a tarot reading so they could see how I run my business. I plan to hire them within the 24 hours after this New Moon, which is a Monday. This hiring will fit nicely with the New Moon in Gemini, which rules communication.
New Moon in Gemini
Since Gemini is an air energy, and really, the sign of the AIR, exploring and improving communication or starting new studies will be ideal for this New Moon phase. Gemini is the “I communicate” energy of the Zodiac. What is something you need to start to “improve understanding”. This New Moon will occur between the 12th and 13th degree of Gemini, making its Sabian symbol 13 Gemini, “A great musician at his/her piano”. Jones says, “This is a symbol of individual artistry as the property of all, with its expression both its strength and the means whereby others are encouraged to like accomplishment.” (222) The key word is ACHIEVEMENT.
From 4/3 to 4/4 the energy of the New Moon will be its strongest. If you get to read this article ahead of those days, you can think about what you want to “communicate”, how you want to connect your heart and mind, what you need to study and understand. You can use the Balsamic Moon from 5/31 to 6/2 to reflect and meditate on how you need to “open your mind” or “share your feelings through words or creative action”. As with all things astrological, timing is everything, so it’s important to know the time of the New Moon in your time zone. I will be looking to take my leap or start my new endeavor after 6:02 am EST.
New Moon Wishing (A Tribute to Jan Spiller’s Work)
I enjoy practical uses of astrology, and there are many. Quite a lot of my professional work involves looking at the astrocartography of my clients, a Fancy Nancy term for location, relocation, and travel astrology. It is a very testable form of astrology, so I was immensely pleased when I came across Spiller’s book: New Moon Astrology: The Secret of Astrological Timing to Make All Your Dreams Come True. In it she details the process for “making wishes”, which is what I like to call a “grabby phrase” to get non-astrology people to peer inside her book. More seriously, it is the Law of Attraction intention setting using astrological timing in the high energy just after the New Moon.
Spiller says, “Wishing is really a matter of deciding what we WANT to create and getting clear on our intention.” (2) This technique is an act of conscious responsibility, not a lazy entitlement. There is actual work to do. This work involves knowing the time of the New Moon in your time zone and preparing to act within the first 8 hours AFTER the New Moon has activated. The strength of the New Moon is at its optimum within the first 24 hours after the transition out of the balsamic phase of the Waning Crescent Moon. Once the New Moon is active, you need to get a note card or a piece of paper to write your wishes down, or invest in and use a nice leather-bound journal. I know we all have a notes option on our cell phones, but handwriting the wishes/intentions is part of the energy ritual.
Spiller recommends making up to 10 wishes, but no more, because too many requests will disperse energy; I generally do around 5, sometimes less (3-4) or more (6-7) depending on which New Moon it is and what is going with my life at the time. One constraint that helps the wishing/intention process is making statements in line with the New Moon in the sign of the day you write your wishes/intentions. This month you will want to write Gemini “flavored” wishes/intentions.
Wishes/Intentions in Gemini
Knowing your chart will actually help you understand which New Moons will be stronger while others may be weaker. I have no points in Gemini, which rules my 8th House of Intimacy. This New Moon does not form any hard aspects with other points in my chart, so it could easily pass “unnoticed”, energetically speaking. It may be a bit of stretch, but not too much, to say that hiring the digital marketing company (the couple) will give them access to my business in a personal way that will affect the shared resources of my life with my wife by working to boost my digital presence and thus help me attain more work and abundance.
So, here’s the “nuts and bolts”. Sit down somewhere you can be comfortable, or where you exert energy to work, like the desk you might use at home to work on your monthly bills or the desk at your work. Get your favorite pen and prepare to write your wishes/intentions. The wording is very important and Spiller suggests starting each sentence with, “I want …”. Here’s what she says to wish for when the New Moon is in Gemini: motion/activity, learning, communication skills, logic/cleverness, social ease, positive daily interactions, and calming mental anxiety. (63).
And here are three examples of the types of wishes/intentions I will write about the late morning of 6/3 (probably around 8 am or 9 am):
- I want to express my professional thoughts in writing with fluid ease and profound meaning.
- I want to easily understand new concepts in developing my business brand.
- I want to find time for and enjoy some leisurely reading by authors who weave stories that I will immensely enjoy.
Once you have them written down put them somewhere you can store them and go back and review them after time has passed. I have a nice wooden box I keep mine in that is in my office. Another good place is a box in your bedroom or a nightstand by your bed. Keep in mind that the quality of the paper, the pen, and the storage location all matter. Being intentional in all aspects of the process matters.
And lastly, consider getting Spiller’s book; this is just a primer article; if you want to find out how deep the well is and how fresh the source, then there is no substitute for reading all 312 pages of her book!
Happy New Moon Wishing!
