Ingress occurs when a point moves out of one sign and into another sign. This transition results in a change in tone and meaning for the point, which is an energy shift designed to promote and continue growing on a regular and ongoing basis. Each point moves at a different speed, so the ingress for Mercury, which is faster than Mars, happens more frequently (mostly every 3 to 4 weeks) while the ingress for Pluto happens much more slowly (after a decade has passed).
This article will look at the ingress of Mercury as it leaves Libra and enters Scorpio. The change in tone involves leaving the cardinal air sign to enter the fixed water sign of the Zodiac. Energetically, it will be like leaving the light of a clear day to enter a dark forest.
Changing the Tone, Changing the Meaning
On October 3rd Mercury will leave Libra and enter Scorpio at 4:14 am eastern standard time. In Libra the “tone” was tied to how we relate, negotiate, reason, and judge. Mercury, an air/earth sign (Gemini and Virgo rulership), felt very at home in a fellow air sign. In Scorpio, the tone is darker and more intense, and it will last for quite some time since Mercury will go retrograde at the end of the month, just before it reaches Sagittarius, meaning it will spend up to 6 weeks (instead of just 3) in Scorpio.
Mercury in Scorpio
Perhaps one of the best ways to think of Mercury in Scorpio is to think about the role of a spy. The spy is someone who pretends to be someone else to find secrets others do not want out in the open. They lie to get to the truth; they can use the truth to reveal liars. Another, maybe more positive expression of this placement would be the private detective, a person trying to find the truth for the benefit of the person who hires them.
In either case, they are required to take “Scorpio” actions and behave in ways that “hide” their true intentions or true identities. As Mercury moves through Scorpio our minds and communication will tend to want to look down the dark path, open the locked room, lift up the rock to see what underneath is, and plunge to the depths of our consciousness.
The ingress moment of entry in a Whole Sign astrology chart is always the 1st Sabian Symbol of the sign. In this case, our point of communication will enter Scorpio 1, which is “a sight-seeing bus”. In the Sabian Symbols book, by Mark Edmund Jones, he writes, “This is the symbol of the individual spirit in its catholicity (inclusiveness) and of the naivete and indomitability of its interest in life as a whole. The keyword is FRIENDLINESS.”
“When positive, the degree is a basic impersonality which capitalizes on the opportunity of the moment and helps reorder the situation whenever there is difficulty or dissatisfaction, and when negative, a genius for avoiding any and every actual expenditure of self” (181). When you see change and the need for change, you help the transformation take place. Otherwise, you find creative ways to “stick your head in the sand” and avoid doing what needs to be done.
At the Personal Level
Understanding the movement of points at the most personal level does require knowledge of your natal astrology chart. With your chart in hand and a solid, basic understanding of astrology, such as knowing the symbols for the signs of the Zodiac and the astronomical and calculated points that make up the layout of the solar system when you were born, you can learn your own flow with points as they leave one sign and enter another.
Based on the date, time, and location of my birth, my chart wheel begins with Scorpio and ends with Libra. The wheel is made up of 12 segments (pie pieces) called Houses. Scorpio rules my 1st House of Identity and Libra rules my 12th House of Spirituality. On October 3rd transiting Mercury will enter my 1st House of Identity, so I can expect the time between October 3rd and December 9 (!) to be a period of intense introspection.
Additionally, I have four points in Scorpio and one of them, Ceres, is directly on the cusp at 0 degrees and 50 minutes, which means I will likely be able to really feel the shift of Mercury into Scorpio on that very day. Ceres rules nourishment, the harvest we need to bring in to feel like we have enough for our needs and hopefully some excess for our enjoyment. The “deep truth” of my Ceres is that my identity is intimately tied to how I find nourishment, a fitting placement for a spiritual adviser who makes a living working individually with clients and sharing knowledge about “hidden subjects”.
When points move through our houses, they bring their unique energy to bear on that area of our lives, both as an emphasis in our own inner development and with external triggers. This particular transit of Mercury will be highly personal for me. For you, it might be doing its work in the area of your career (10th House), or family (4th House), or community (11th House). Wherever it is entering that sign in your chart, you can expect some intense thinking and communicating (Mercury) to take place.
Into the Dark Forest
In their book Astrology, the Divine Science, Marcia Moore, and Mark Douglas give Mercury in Scorpio the following keynote: “the mind penetrates to the essence of matters” and the symbol is: “a cryptographer endeavors to crack a code” (134). During this time everyone will be attuned to the mysteries of their lives, whether this involves the questionable behavior of a partner or the need to face our personal demons and hard truths.
Expect yourself to be more skeptical and less willing to accept people or circumstances at “face value”. Oddly, this can be a time in which hidden things become known, but also a time when people make an intense effort to hide things, they wish no one would know, for fear of the consequences. Also, do not be surprised if there is a general increase in the intensity of dialogue and a tendency to seriousness over levity in pretty much any and all situations.
