Mercury Conjunct Venus: Communicating Needs

Throughout each month transiting points create dynamic relationships with your natal chart points.  Often times two transiting points will relate to one another in a way that affects us all, depending on the points involved.  This article will look at one of these dynamics happening between two points this month, Mercury in Virgo merged with Venus in Virgo. When points share the same sign and degree, they are in what is known as a conjunct aspect (conjunction).  When points merge, they share energy. The point of communication will share energy with the point of relating.

The Conjunction, and Mercury and Venus

This month, when the faster moving Mercury reaches 28 degrees 49 minutes (28d49m) of Virgo, it will merge with Venus at 11:04 am EST.  The impact of this relationship begins to be felt up to 3 degrees before and 3 degrees after the exact aspect and is known as the orb of influence.  When the faster moving body approaches, the aspect is said to be approaching and is building energy.  Once the exact aspect has passed, the aspect is said to be separating and is losing energy.  The duration of this particular aspect will run from September 8th to September 20th.

Adding to the dynamic nature of this event will be the ingress of Mercury and Venus into Libra while the conjunction is still in effect.  Mercury rules Virgo and Venus rules Libra, so at the beginning of the conjunction Mercury will be stronger, but towards the end of the conjunction, Venus will be stronger. Mercury will pass by Venus on September 13th and both points will have entered Libra on September 14th. The time leading up to the exact conjunction will be about communicating the needs and the time after will be about adjusting to the needs that were communicated.

Mercury

Mercury represents communication and how we prefer to communicate and learn.  It rules two signs and houses, Gemini/3rd and Virgo/6th.  Where Mercury resides in your chart reveals your primary way to communicate, gather knowledge, make friendships, and connect with your local environment.

My Mercury is in Aries in my 6th House of Skills, Day-to-Day Work, and Health, so I prefer to communicate directly (Aries), especially when it comes to work-life (6th House). I have an active mind and prefer to act on my thoughts rather quickly; I even talk fast, which I have to work to slow down; otherwise, people have a hard time keeping up with my conversation and the thoughts I am expressing.

With Mercury moving through Virgo at this time, we will benefit from thinking about and communicating our problems and the various solutions we want to try to solve problems.  Mercury in Virgo can be an excellent time to review finances, clean the house, clean our computer files, and check-in with everyone in our lives to see how they are doing.

Venus

Venus represents the feminine divine and how we relate to others, feel about our bodies/environment, and our attitudes about connecting to people.  Venus rules both our needs, by way of its rulership of the 2nd House, and our contracts (legal matters) with people in the world around us, by way of its rulership of the 7th House.  Where Venus resides in your chart reveals the nature of your way of attracting/seeking relationships and making them work.

My Venus is in Aries in my 6th House of Service and Health, so I prefer to keep my relationships from “restricting” me; I operate best when I feel able to come and go freely in and out of the relationship dynamic, especially related to my work (6th House).  While I do enjoy some competitive sports, most of my preferred exercise routines are individualistic (lifting weights, running, and swimming).

With Venus moving through Virgo at this time, we will benefit from doing plenty of relationship maintenance, just like getting a tune-up for a car or having it detailed. Also, we should think about what we need to do to take care of our bodies, in terms of nutrition and exercise.  A review of your diet and an assessment of your physical conditioning would serve you well under this transit.

Mercury Conjunct Venus: Integration

The conjunction aspect seeks to merge energy; the points and signs involved need to blend together and work as one.  During the period of this conjunction, the point involving communicating and the point involving need and relating will be merging in their journey through Virgo.  This conjunction will “favor” Mercury at the start and then Venus when both go into Libra.

Virgo’s service and healing energy want to help others in need and take care of itself at the same time.  During this conjunction, there will be an emphasis on relationships and how well they are working or not working.  Virgo has a critical “eye” and can spot flaws rather easily, so any flaws in a relationship will glare out during this transit in order to help you resolve and fix them.  This energy will continue a trend of work that started last month when Venus and Mars were also conjunct in Virgo.  So, Venus has really been getting “tuned up”!

It will be the “little things” that matter during this conjunction, the smallest details of all of our relationships and how they work or do not work for us.  We will be better able to see if what people say matches with what they do, as well as being able to assess how we feel about what people say and do around us, with us, and for us.  Once the energy moves out of critical Virgo and into harmonizing Libra, we will want to figure out how to make needed adjustments for the health of our relationships.

The Sabian Symbol

The Sabian Symbol for this conjunction is 29 Virgo, “A man gaining secret knowledge from a paper he is reading”. Jones writes, “This is a symbol of the world’s conservatism, and of the refusal of nature to surrender any part of her heritage unnecessarily”.  The keyword for this symbol is DISCOVERY.  Further, he says, “when positive, the degree is imagination brought to the full of its powers through conscious effort, and when negative, loss of common sense in pure supposition” (Jones, the Sabian Symbols, 328). In short, you may “discover” some new things about your relationships, just do not jump to conclusions without being discerning!
