We all hold onto things that we should let go of. This can be anything from a ruined piece of clothing to a relationship that is no longer serving you. Make an inventory of the things you could do without to better enhance your life.
Make a List
Start by making a list, really take the time to assess what is benefiting you in your life and what is not. Whatever appears to be the most damaging, get rid of it. This is the time to do your last-minute spring cleaning (both physically and emotionally) before summer begins.
What are some examples?
You might want to start with your actual closet and throw out clothes that you don’t wear anymore. Give them away, consign them or give them to charity. Really think about what you need and what you don’t. Why are you holding onto something you never wear? Or why are you keeping dresses and tops you never wear? Clean out the clutter, get rid of the things you don’t need. When you write your list, think of the things you can’t live without, and what’s really important to you. Remember they are just materials, that it’s just stuff and it can be replaced. Think of anything that you have grown out of. Think of the things that you can’t live without. Make a list of priorities, which will help you make your decisions.
Sometimes we take our emotional issues and bury them at the back of the closet. This is a good time to drag them back out, deal with them and let them go. Figure out how you feel about the situation. For example, say you’ve taken space from a friend, and it’s been a while, now could be a great time to decide if you want that person in your life or not. The same goes for romantic relationships, if you’ve been debating whether or not you want to be with someone now is the time to really dig deep and make a sound decision. Make a pros and cons list, walk down memory and really assess whether or not this person is healthy for you. Sometimes we get involved with the wrong people who take us down the wrong path, and now is the time to ask yourself does this person bring anything into my life?
Do you understand better what an emotional closet is now? Now you can drag out any emotional issue that you may have had with anyone and weigh out the situation.
It will give you a sense of freedom, in that you feel a weight lifted off your shoulders, and it allows you to have healthy relationships in your life. As mentioned, it is cleaning out the clutter that can sometimes disrupt our lives.
Getting rid of toxic people and excess clothing can really open up room for new things in your life. Not just anything, but positive and constructive things, things that make you feel good about yourself.
Cleaning out your emotional closet is like a cleanse of some kind. It will help reboot you and get you in the right mind frame for summer. Don’t just go around throwing random things out, really think about what you want to get rid of and what you want to keep.
